What is Panchakarma? „When the body is purified, the metabolism and digestion improve, health is renewed, the sense organs retain their vitality, the ageing process slows, and illnesses disappear.“ Charaka, Ayurvedic physician
Ayurvedic medicine is the oldest holistic (body/mind) medicine. Since 1982, Ayurveda has been approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an effective medical system. Simple and straightforward, the principles of Ayurveda (the science of life and longevity), though 5,000 years old, are valid even today, and have been proven in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Panchakarma therapy, is the traditional Ayurvedic Method for personalized, detoxification-cleansing and rejuvenation program, which was originally created for royalty to promote longevity. This is a speciality of Ayurveda, because no other medical science in this world has described anything similar to this. Ayurveda has a specific approach in treating diseases, which is different from all other systems of medicine. The metabolism which functions at the level of each and every cell in the body generates waste products (toxins), which accumulate in the various systems, tissues and organs. These toxins need to be removed periodically, because if they build up, they can interfere and disrupt the normal functioning of these systems or organs, giving rise to various diseases. Instead of relaying only on medicines, Ayurveda advocates that periodic detoxification of the body is extremely essential. The body is purified naturally and gently. It removes toxins from the inner walls of the alimentary canal, rejuvenates the whole body, and establishes equilibrium. The diseases, like asthma, skin diseases, hypertension, heart diseases and many other diseases where the patients have to take life long medications, treated in this way are cured completely and permanently. Deep emotional healing is often experienced as a result of Panchakarma. People report a feeling of lightness in the body and clarity of mind, the weight naturally balances. The several days of cleansing involves a daily approx. two-hour treatment consisting of a procedures, which enables the remove toxins from bodily tissues. These seven tissues are called dhatus, they are the constituents that make up the physical body. In order from superficial to deep, they are: plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, nerve, and reproductive tissue. Each day of your Panchakarma works deeper, from superficial to deep affecting nurturing, dislodging toxins from all 7 dhatus.
Which are these procedures? There are GENTLE therapeutic procedures used for complete cleansing of the body. A milder approach is to begin with an appropriated light diet for each of the three body types of constitutions, which will cleanse the digestive system. This is followed by an herbal oil massage (Abhyanga) to help surface toxins deeply embedded inside the body. This is followed by steam therapy which open the pores, allowing the toxins to be released, gentle herbal purgations and basti (colon cleansing). Another helpful treatment is the Shirodhara, where a continuous stream of warm herbal oil is dripped onto the forehead to purify the mind and body, and relax the nervous system. It is most effective when applied during meditation. Ayurveda states that food is 60% of the medicine it uses to treat disease As part of your Panchakarma experience, fresh food is prepared for you every day during your program. Also, if you are interested, we will show you how to create delicious, nutritious, simple Ayurvedic meals that you can continue to enjoy in your life. When you treat the cause, imbalance, you treat the effect, disease. The purpose of Pancha karma is to support the body in creating balance, and in that way disease is addressed. These procedures actually detoxify the body through various routes.
How often to receive Panchakarma? Each Panchakarma session expands on the previous one, healing of body, mind and emotion deeper and deeper with each consecutive year. The ancient Ayurvedic texts suggest receiving Pancha Karma three times per year for optimum cleansing and rejuvenation. However some people only have the time and the means to receive it only once per year, which is good for maintenance. With every year it is truly possible to grow healthier and younger, rather than older and diseased. It is possible to grow in health and Ayurveda shows us how.
